Math Day

Math day epitomised Treamis’s talent, enthusiasm and devotion to the subject -Math. The day started off with an assembly filled with puzzles, a quiz and a plethora of information from the high school students. Grade 9 organised two plays. Both of them were excellent because they perfectly explained the importance of currency and how exchange rates work. Just when everyone thought the collection of math related acts were over, it was time for the the math parody. From the popular song by Nicki Minaj- Super Bass, came a math parody that was the magnificent cherry on the math day assembly.

Students from grades 1-7 were not idle. During the morning half, each class held their own exhibition of math related projects, activities and games. The 7th grade even set up stalls to sell snacks and play games. The afternoon session saw a quiz competition organised for the primary school, while the high school listened to a talk by guest lecturer Prof. KN Srinivasa Murthy.

Waste Management – Kindergarten Activities

The four R’s at Treamis are Reading, Writing, Rithmetic – and Recycling! Kindergarten students learnt the value of making the best out of the waste and protecting our resources with three activities – recycling, wet waste composting and waste segregation.

For the recycling activity, they shaped their waste stationery products into useful items such as hand puppets, pencil stands and drums. They then learnt the colour codes important for waste segregation. Later, they visited the school garden, where the gardener showed them how to use the compost pit and the value of earthworms in the garden.

The youngest students had fun and took away some important lessons about their environment at the same time.

Shoots and Sprouts

Shoots and Sprouts 2

“Okay, listen up children”, said the teachers “We are going to have a garden of our own here at Treamis”. “Ma’am can we bring green gram?” said one student, another student wanted to bring brinjal sapling, another some red lentils and so on. The enthusiasm of the students was so evident. They could not wait to start on this project. The main objective or purpose of this project is waste management, where wastage of food along with fruit and vegetable peels are used to make manure in a compost pit that has been dug up in a corner of the fruit and vegetable patch adjacent to the playground. Also, it serves as a good means to teach children about healthy eating and also instil a sense of responsibility in the students towards their environment and become responsible for their own self and their belongings.

The students of Grades 5, are undertaking the responsibility of maintaining the fruit and vegetable patch. The students of grades 5, 6 and 7 have to collect the food waste from the cafeteria and make a layer of this along with a layer of leaves and mud. Our school gardener Chinappa procured worms from a nearby field and left them into the compost pit.

Pots were arranged in rows and columns ready for the students to sow their seeds. Also square patches in between the pots served proper to plant onion, potato, corn, wheat and green gram sprouts. Ragi millets were spread in small pots bordering the entire patch. Apart from these, spinach seeds, green chilli, turnip, raddish were also planted. The students were advised by the gardener to water the patch and pots every alternate day. Some stem cut outs of flowering plants were also planted in medium size pots by students of grade 6.

Students of grade 7 will be planting fruit trees such as papaya, pomegranate, guava, curry leaves etc.

The ABC of teaching toddlers!

The ABC of teaching toddlers!

Teaching young toddlers the ABC can be a challenging and fun activity! Getting this first lesson right, is important, as this is going to be the first formal learning experience for the child, and sets his mindset and attitude for lessons ahead. So it is important for teachers to be well-skilled to make this an interesting learning experience for the young student, who is at this age – eager to lap up knowledge in this exciting, new world that is opening up to him.

Some smart ways of teaching are those that incorporate the maximum use of sensory skills. So teachers must use visual representation, sound, feel and touch to get the same message across, so that:

  1. The message is iterated in different ways and this gives a holistic learning experience to the child.
  2. Different children find different mediums easy to understand, so using a mix, enables each child to learn better through the medium he is naturally best suited to.

Here are some ways the different sensory skills can be used, and ways at which Treamis too looks at teaching its young students.

Vision

  • Looking at alphabet posters.
  • Looking at alphabet books.
  • Looking for letters in the newspaper or magazines.

Hearing

  • Listening to the ABC song.
  • Singing the ABC song.
  • Listening to and repeating nursery rhymes that mention certain letters.

Touch and Movement

  • Touching plastic alphabet shapes.
  • Tracing letters cut from sandpaper with fingers.
  • Making letters out of clay.

Towards a revolution in education

“Education will be the single biggest transformative factor in catapulting India into the league of developed nations. It is education that will establish us firmly as a knowledge society.” President, Pranab Mukherjee,  President of India recently said.

The Government of India has been working consistently in this direction, and in fact in 2009 the landmark  “Right to Free & Compulsory Education Act” was passed by the Government. This Act entitles all children between the ages of 6-14 years, free and compulsory elementary education. It is  based on principles of equity and non-discrimination.

All states are working towards this objective, and Kerala is one state that is ranked among the most literate and educationally progressive states in the country.

Kerala was also the first state to introduce Information Technology as a subject at High School level.  The state is now moving towards IT Enabled Education. The initiative taken by Kerala is now influencing other states and Karnataka and Gujarat are also planning to introduce Free Software in their schools.

In Karnataka, Bangalore has evolved as one of the global education hubs in India, having a number of International schools. These schools come under the purview of Indian education board such as ICSE and CBSE, as well as international boards like IB and IGCSE.

These international schools focus more on the holistic education for their students rather than just focusing on rote-learning, and Treamis is one such school.

Earlier too Bangalore has had a proud lineage, and the first engineering college(UVCE) in Karnataka was started by the then Diwan of Mysore Sir M. Visvesvaraya in 1917 in Bangalore. It was the fifth engineering college to be started in the country at that time.

As Maulana Azad, our first Minister of Education said, and whose birth anniversary we celebrate as “National Education Day” every Nov 11, “Education imparted from the heart can bring a revolution in society.”

Let us all work towards achieving that!

Making waves in the hot sun!

The 6th Inter-school Treamis Swimming Championship conducted at Treamis witnessed participation of over 300 students from nearly 50 Bangalore schools.

There were nearly 140 events for boys and girls for different age groups from under 6 (U6), to under 16 (U16).

The International School Bangalore (TISB) won the rolling trophy scoring 142 points.  The runners-up were Indus International School with 82 points.

Two distinguished guests graced the inauguration of the event – Mr. Parashivaiah, Additional Director of Income Tax, and Mr. S. Subramanya, Senior Branch Manager, LIC.

The audience was seen cheering along the youngest swimmers enthusiastically. The slight patter of rain towards the afternoon gave a fitting end to the day’s events and did not deter the participants at all.  “This is a great opportunity for our students,” remarked a coach from New Horizon Public School. “Thanks for organizing such an event.”

Kudos to Treamis swimming coaches, staff members and student council members for conducting the event.  Thanks to LIC for partly sponsoring the event.

Treamis Interschool Swimming Championship is the signature event organized annually by Treamis in its Half Olympic size regulated swimming pool.  Swimming is a compulsory subject for students at Treamis starting from nursery.
