"As long as a system admits it's imperfect, and is searching for a way to do
better, then that's what's important" said Edward Shaughnessy while comparing different K-12 educational systems.
Edward is a science teacher at Lake
Forest Academy, a residential school in Illinois, USA and previously served as department chairperson. In a week-long
international faculty workship held at Treamis, he expressed his enthusiasm for improvement in global education.
Sponsored by both Treamis and Lake Forest
Academy, the workshop was attended by teachers, parents and people interested in early and secondary education. Topics
such as curriculum, classroom dynamics, instructional materials, homework, teacher communication, and parental involvement
were discussed. This workshop marks the beginning of historic initiative taken by Treamis in association with Lake Forest
Academy, to develop a common learning platform for Kindergarten - 12th grade education in the two countries.
Ardle Hagar, chairperson of Lake Forest's mathematics
department explained, "I had a great session with teachers. While sharing a lot of different ideas in teaching,
we have gained a lot of ideas. In spite of cultural differences, there is a passion which is common to the teaching
community."
A segment of the workshop
included case studies on typical and atypical problems in the classroom that teachers have faced. Teachers from the
US and India proposed solutions to the situations described based on their respective educational cultures
and backgrounds. The differences and similarities in their analysis and approach were noted.
Treamis World School and Lake Forest Academy share the vision of strong inter-school partnerships
in order to achieve curriculum goals. Both the schools are aligned in their mission and philosophy and offer integrated
curriculum of academics, arts and sports. The schools share best practices and information technology. They also
have both teacher and student exchange programs. Students can study in other school from one month to a semester.
